Sequoia

Sequoia, popularly known as redwoods, is a subfamily of coniferous trees. It includes the largest and tallest trees in the world. From coastal California and Oregon these trees can live for thousands of years. All 12 of the world’s largest trees are Giant sequoias. Hyperion is a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) in California considered the world’s tallest known living tree, measuring 115.92m or 380.3ft. It was found in a remote area of Redwood National Park and It is estimated to contain 530 m3 (18,600 cu ft) of wood. The park also houses the second and third known tallest trees, named Helios and Icarus. Stephen Sillett (American Botanist) estimates Hyperion to be 600 years old while others report it to be roughly 700–800 years old. The location of the Hyperion tree is nominally secret, but is available via internet search. Researchers have said that woodpecker activity at the top may have prevented the tree from growing taller. In February 2012, Hyperion was featured in the BBC Radio 4 documentary James and the Giant Redwoods by James Aldred.
